Today marks the beginning of the most awaited festival of India…Diwali. The splendor, grandeur and the sparkle of this festival of lights is in no way less than the celebration of Christmas and it is one occasion that unites diverse India like nothing else.
The day today is called Dhanteras meaning dhan – wealth and teras – thirteen. Therefore, the auspicious thirteenth day of wealth. According to the lunar calendar, the month of Kartik falls in October/November each year and starting on the thirteenth day of this month the festival of diwali is celebrated for five days.
Today, people consider it very auspicious to by gold, silver jewellary and if someone cannot afford that much, at least a utensil for the household is a must buy and is considered a good omen.
Mostly the business community worships godess Lakshmi, the revered god of wealth, today. In villages you can even find cattle being worshipped by the farmers, as they are the main source of their earnings.
People clean their homes, and light beautiful earthen lamps called diyas at night. Although modern electrical fancy lights have replaced the traditional diyas, their shimmering light is no less enchanting.
Dhanteras, is the beginning of a festival that believes in showering everyone with luck, prosperity, and eternal happiness. Enlighten your life too today by lighting a tiny lamp at home and maybe buying a trinket of gold.
