Here lives the Sun God

As the temperatures keep soaring in all parts of the country, I thought I will share information about a remarkable temple in Orissa that is dedicated to the God of heat and light – The Sun.
The Konark Sun Temple is an architectural marvel. It is built like the shape of a chariot with 12 pairs of wheels to carry the Sun God on his daily journey across the sky. Gods, demons, Kings, elephants and of course horses jostle for space on its walls with so many fascinating depictions that it can take an entire day to study each character carefully.
Even the wheels and their numbers have been carefully chosen. The twelve wheels to depict the twelve months of the year, while the eight spokes mark the division of the day into three hour sections. The seven horses pulling the chariot represent the day of the week as you must have guessed by now. Once you enter the temple there is the majestic image of the Sun God flanked by his many wives.
Another place to visit in the same compound which will fascinate astronomers, is the Shrine of the nine planets, a large stone slab carved with the deities of the nine planets.
The Sun is universally accepted as the power behind all living forms. It is here in the Konark Sun Temple of Orissa, that you can pay your homage to this gigantic ball of fire.
