Hindu Marriage In Kerala.
Normally people believe in arranged marriages which is done by the elders, because marriage is a union of two different families not two individuals. Social status, financial security and other things are take into consideration while searching for prospective matches. In most cases things will go smoothly only after checking the compatibility of horoscopes of both the boy & girl The boy & girl get a chance to meet each other and the elders fix the auspicious date and time ("Muhoortham") for the marriage with the help of an astrologer
In the engagement, both the close relatives and family members meet in the girl's house and exchange the horoscopes (Jathakam) of the boy & girl, by the boy's and girl's father in front of the pictures of god/godess in which they believe.and in the traditional dress, both the boy & girl exchange rings in presense of the relatives. This is sacred one and is not allowed to withdraw.
On the marriage day, the girl visits the temple of her favorite deity. There an VAZHIPADU (offering) is made in the name, and star, of the groom.
Before the auspicious time, the relatives of the bride will receive the groom and his relatives. The brother or a senior person of the girl will apply sandal paste on the forehead of the boy and the boy will be lead to the 'mandapam' - an elevated place usually decorated by flowers.
Then the bride is also led to the mandapam, just before the muhoortham (auspicious time), in company of senior people of her family. Then the father (or other elders if he is dead) will lead her to the mandapam and seats her on the left side of the groom.
At the auspicious time groom will tie the gold chain (Thali- sacred thread) to the girl, (some people prefer yellow thread), with the help of his sister or somebody who is his senior.. Then both of them will garland each other. He then gives her 'pudava'- the traditional sari in a silver or steel platter. Then three times, both of them will circle the mandapam. Some seniors or a priest (pujari) will also be advise them go through the rites without hitch. After that the people take "Sadya" and groom and his relatives return back to his house alongwith the bride.
