Summer’s here…so is the watermelon!

If summer is the time for extremely hot weather in India, it is also the time to feast on some extremely cool fruits like the watermelon. This juicy, subtly crunchy, thirst quenching fruit is just so welcome in the scorching summer heat, that even the sight of piles and piles of watermelons on road side vendor shops is enough to send a soothing, cooling effect all through the body.
Although watermelon is a fruit originally from Africa, it has been adopted by countries all over the world. And why not, it is not just a very cool thirst quencher but comes loaded with quite a lot of nutritive value. Watermelon is,
• Good source of Vitamin C, Vitamn A, and Vitamin B6
• Good source of lycopene that helps fight cancer
• A natural antioxidant
• An excellent source of water as it is 90% water
• Because this food has a higher water content and lower calorie content than many other fruits (a whole cup of watermelon contains only 48 calories), it delivers more nutrients per calorie-an outstanding health benefit!
If you are in India right now, you will most surely be battling with the heat and it is exactly why you need the dose of watermelon right now to avoid sun stroke, dehydration or to just cool the senses. And if you have indeed decided to visit the tempting shop by the roadside, to buy one of that green oval shaped fruit, here are few thing to look out for,
• Look at the color and quality of the flesh, which should be a deep color and absent from white streaks.
• If it features seeds, they should be deep in color.
• When choosing a whole watermelon, look for one that is heavy for its size.
• The rind should be relatively smooth and should neither be overly shiny nor overly dull.
Apart from this, one side of the melon should have an area that is distinct in color from the rest of the rind, displaying a yellowish or creamy tone. This is the underbelly, the place that was resting on the ground during ripening, and if the fruit does not have this marking, it may have been harvested prematurely, which will negatively affect its taste, texture and juiciness.
So now that you have the watermelon, go take a bite into the juiciest fruit in town and chill out even in 40 degree Celsius of heat
